Why I started

Quietly, and a little stubbornly

Avery Brooks began the way most good things do, quietly, and a little stubbornly. Before it was a store, it was a habit: I kept re-folding the same handful of pieces in my own closet, wondering why so much of what I bought looked exciting on a hanger and forgettable by the second wear. I wanted clothes that got better with time, not worse. When I couldn't quite find enough of them in one place, I decided to go looking properly, and open a shop worth trusting.

The earliest ideas were scribbled on the backs of receipts and argued over with friends late at night, about which brands actually held up, which stitching lasted, and whether a wardrobe staple is ever really allowed to be boring. What drove me was impatience with fast fashion's short attention span, the idea that clothing should be disposable rather than something to live in. I wanted the opposite: a small, honest collection worth wearing often, mending when needed, and keeping for years.

Small, and I like it that way

Avery Brooks has stayed close to its roots as something I run personally. Decisions about what makes it onto my shelves are still made the same way they were on day one, at my own kitchen table, and that closeness shows up in how I operate: small batches, careful sourcing, and a genuine reluctance to carry anything I wouldn't wear myself. Every new piece goes through the same test before it reaches the shop: would I reach for this on an ordinary Tuesday, not just for a photo.

I care more about how a seam holds up after twenty washes than how a garment looks in a single photo, which is why I look for clean lines, considered proportions, and fabrics chosen for how they wear and drape over time, over anything loud or fleeting.
